Tandem road bikes
The tandem bike, or a bicycle for two, originally appeared in the 1800’s. This bike is designed to be ridden by more than one person. It’s known as tandem because of the way the seats are aligned (one behind the other), if they are side by side that bike is called sociable.
The official creator of this kind of bike is considered to be Mikael Pedersen in 1898, and his first version of the tandem bikes that weighted about 24 pounds. But since than the technology has changed and today’s tandem bikes are as good as the single ones.
What is great with this bike? The fact that they have a greater peddling power than the single ones is the first. It also has the same wind resistance than the other bikes. The tandem road bikes can reach a higher speed than the single ones because they have grated power in peddling and they can make a greater wind resistance than the singles.
I know, that when someone says a tandem they imagine that the bike will be the hardest thing they’ve ever lifted, but believe me, you’ll be ling to yourself. With the high performance technology today you can find tandems that weight a lot less than the singles.
In the past the front rider was known as the captain, pilot or steersman and the rear rider as stocker, rear admiral or navigator. The tandem bikes today are mostly used in races for visually disabled persons where the blind is the peddling power and another sighted person is used as the front rider. Also it is used by couples, who enjoy the experience of working together.

If you are a first time tandem rider give yourself the time to learn how to work at the same time and I highly recommend baying a second hand tandem bike if you are an on-and-off cyclist. If you are a serious cyclist, don’t rush on getting that new tandem bike. I recommend that you by a tandem road bike than costs more, take along your partner and enjoy the time spent together.
